1 ~ (of sb); ~ (at/of sth) feeling of discontent caused by sb else´s good fortune or success, esp when one wishes this for oneself 忌妒; 羡慕

His new car excited their envy. 他们很羡慕他的新汽车.
They only say such unkind things about you out of envy, ie because they are full of envy. 他们纯粹出於忌妒才说你这些坏话.
